PORTUGAL. Aeroportos de Portugal last night inaugurated a stylish new retail and food & beverage complex in the airside zone at Porto Airport.
Among the branded outlets just opened at Porto are Carolina Herrera, Purificacion Garcia, Swarovski, Bimba & Lola, Adolfo Dominguez, Story Store, Gelataria Olá, Boutique dos Relógios, Pandora, L’Occitane and La Cure Gourmande (the last named landside). The first Costa Coffee outlet in the north of Portugal will also open soon at the location.
With the opening of the new zone, the area occupied by commercial activities at Porto has grown by 2,500sq m to 6,104sq m. The number of stores has increased by 18 with 43 brands now available. Work on the new zone took six months and represented an investment of €4 million from ANA and its concessionaires, including McArthurGlen Luxury Retail (Collezioni), which manages several of the new outlets.
ANA said it expected sales from retail stores at Porto to hit €34 million in 2010, a figure that has grown by +60% over the past five years.

The inauguration ceremony last night included a vibrant fashion show hosted by ANA, followed by a series of musical performances from local acts, which stopped departing passengers in their tracks.
ANA Retail Director Luis Rodolfo told The Moodie Report: “We have made a big investment in the new commercial areas at Porto, just as we are doing across our network today, with other big projects taking place in particular at Lisbon and Faro airports. Here we invested €2 million with roughly the same amount coming from tenants. We want to create points of difference at our airports, and encourage new brands to join us, and we think this airside area at Porto is a good step along that path.”
The move completes the latest phase of ANA’s Retail Strategic Plan at the location, and is part of a broad drive to enhance the quality of commercial activities across the ANA network in Portugal.

“The Retail Strategic Plan suggests the opening of more shopping areas, optimization of the tenant mix and new concepts and commercial services that are in tune with the needs and profile of the passengers, as well as improved passenger flow, improved communication and better segmenting of the offer.”
The new layout of the area has brought the store fronts closer to passengers, added ANA, with the new shopping zone akin to a retail avenue, with outlets on each side.
“The visibility of the retail offer has been improved, with greater flexibility in the format and sizes of the areas,” said the group, adding that the zone blended together well in design terms, providing greater clarity for the passenger.
Record retail sales
In related news, ANA has reported record retail and food & beverage sales across the group’s Portuguese airports for August, with volumes hitting €25 million.
ANA is forecasting total retail and food & beverage sales of €215 million in 2010 from its 25,565sq m of space at Portugal’s major airports.
Note: Full details of the Porto Airport transformation and a report on ANA’s commercial activities across its Portuguese network will appear in The Moodie Report Print Edition for October.
