AirAsia announces travel retail delivery plan as Langkawi opens up to domestic visitors

MALAYSIA. AirAsia has announced plans to deliver travel retail purchases made via its ‘Super App’ to hotels and homes across Langkawi, as the island opens up to tourism.

The resort island today became the first holiday location in Malaysia to reopen after a lengthy lockdown that restricted domestic and international travel. Langkawi was chosen as a pilot destination for travel by fully vaccinated domestic tourists initially.

AirAsia Group said it planned to play its part in reviving tourism, with the digital travel and lifestyle group’s Super App allowing visitors to confirm their flights and accommodation, book a ride to the airport and to complete their duty free shopping, all on one platform. Langkawi is a duty free island; the AirAsia offer for Malaysia consists mainly of beauty products, fashion accessories, toys and logoed merchandise.

The company said: “Guests can look forward to an improved, more exciting travel experience as the AirAsia Super App is collaborating with the Langkawi Development Authority to offer a new digitised and contactless duty free shopping experience which will see an island-wide and same-day delivery across Langkawi hotels by the end of this month. Soon there will also be a full spectrum of fulfilment from inflight seat delivery, airport pickup apart from hotel and home delivery with 13 ASEAN retailers on board with AirAsia’s duty free offerings.

AirAsia Super App CEO Amanda Woo said: “We are pleased to join hands with Langkawi Development Authority (LADA) to reinvigorate the economic and tourism recovery in Langkawi starting with the introduction of a new duty-free shopping experience for travellers with island-wide delivery.

“The digitalisation of duty free shopping in Langkawi through our Super App will power Langkawi up as ASEAN’s first online duty free shopping destination, and this is just one of the many things we look forward to collaborating with LADA in the long-term.

“By the end of September, for the first time in Malaysia, customers can order Langkawi duty free products online and have them delivered straight to their hotel the same day, via Teleport’s six-hour express service. To create convenience for our customers, they can select their preferred delivery time or engage concierge services by our partner hotels to receive on their behalf. We will offer free delivery for all purchases, as well as special discounts to AirAsia guests at our partner hotels during our launch campaign.”

AirAsia Malaysia plans 90 weekly flights to Langkawi departing from Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Johor Bahru, Ipoh and Kota Bharu.
