HONG KONG. Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) has become the sole shareholder of AsiaWorld-Expo (AWE) after the government transferred its interests in the conventions, sports and entertainment venue.
The government and AAHK previously jointly owned AWE. In 2018, AAHK acquired the ownership of the company that manages and operates the venue.
The airport company said it is taking forward AWE’s Phase 2 development, which upon completion will house Hong Kong’s largest indoor multipurpose performance arena with over 20,000 seats and updated facilities. The Phase 2 expansion will also increase AWE’s total exhibition space to 100,000sq m.
AWE is an integral part of Sky City, a core element of the Airport City development strategy. SkyCity houses Hong Kong’s largest retail, dining and entertainment complex, as well as offices and hotels. Airport Authority said that the expanded AWE will attract visitors from overseas, the Greater Bay Area, and Hong Kong, “propelling the development of Airport City into a destination of its own and contributing to the economic development of Hong Kong and the region”.
