MEXICO. Travel restaurateur Areas has won a major food & beverage tender at Guadalajara Airport which is set to be worth US$150 million over its seven-year concession period. The company will operate eight new establishments covering more than 1,000sq m.
With nine F&B venues already operated by Areas at the airport, the new business means the company will now manage about 50% of the total F&B space in the travel hub, which serves more than 20 million passengers a year.

The eight new outlets will feature a combination of renowned international brands (Carl’s Jr., Subway, Sbarro and KFC), local concepts (Tacos Don Miguelón, Maestro Dobel Tequila, Moshi Moshi and Cantina La Imperial) and own-brand café, Farine.
The new F&B venues – which will see Areas invest more than US$5 million – are scheduled to open in August 2024.
Areas CEO Oscar Vela said: “We continue to grow and diversify our business. Just after winning the Madrid-Barajas Airport and the IFEMA fairgrounds tenders in Spain, our recent openings at Houston Airport and the West Virginia travel plazas in the United States, the acquisition of our competitor Sighor on the French highways, and our entry into the Dresden train station in Germany, winning this tender in Guadalajara Airport consolidates us as a leading player in Mexico.
“Our goal is to continue winning more tenders, both in South America and North America. We are excited to partner again with GAP [Guadalajara Airport operator Pacific Airport Group] in these new concessions.”

The new concessions reinforce Areas’ position in Mexico, where the company has been operating since 2001. It now manages 140 points of sale including 82 establishments in 22 airports, and 58 convenience stores in large tourist complexes. The company is also one of Mexico’s three main operators in the motorway catering sector.
