SPAIN. Ãreas, a leading Spanish provider of F&B and other integrated traveller services, has been awarded the management of eight new concessions in Madrid Barajas Airport.
The company said that the operation will quadruple its retail space in Barajas and boost its total sales at the airport over the next five years to more than €30 million.
Ãreas already operates four other concessions at the capital’s airport – two Sibarium outlets (deli products), a The Airport Market (supermarket) and a Travel Mate (travel goods) – all located in Terminal 4. These stores brought in revenues of €2.8 million in 2010.
Ãreas President Pedro Fontana said: “The addition of these eight new retail outlets in Barajas gives us great satisfaction and confirms that our commitment to a mix of own and third party brands has been successful.
“While any new success is cause for celebration within the company, this operation marks a milestone for Ãreas. It is a source of pride to have a significant presence in one of Europe’s main airports.”
The new outlets, which will involve the hiring of 45 new employees, are distributed among terminals 1, 2 and 3: two Sibarium stores, located in terminals T1 and T2; two Aïta shops specialising in costume jewellery and accessories, located in T1 and T3; and two Adidas retail stores, in T1 and T3. A Piquadro store, which sells office supplies and leathergoods and a new The Sweet Market outlet, which sells chocolates and sweets, will complement the retail offer in T1.
In addition to these 11 stores Ãreas also operates 51 restaurants at Madrid Barajas. When T4 was inaugurated in 2006 the company invested €18 million in its food & beverage business, its biggest investment in this sector.

New concessions in Atocha, Alicante Airport and Platja d’Aro
Besides the new additions to Barajas, Ãreas has recently launched six additional new retail outlets.
The coastal town of Platja d’Aro, in Girona, now boasts a new official FC Barcelona shop, in addition to the two others Ãreas runs in Barcelona.
In the traveller-in-transit arena, the company has also opened a The Station Market outlet in the AVE section of the Atocha railway station in Madrid.
In late March it will open four new stores in the new terminal of Alicante Airport: a Sibarium (deli products and products with a designation of origin label); a News and Books (newspapers and books); a store space housing a Travel Mate (travel articles); a Cottet store (sunglasses) and another shop that will sell products from the Tuc Tuc (children’s clothes) and Story Store (toys) brands.
