Areas to open three F&B venues under ten-year concession at Dresden rail station

GERMANY. Travel restaurateur Areas has signed an agreement with German railway company Deutsche Bahn to open three new outlets as part of a restoration programme in Dresden central station, which serves around 60,000 passengers a day.

The company – which has run operations in Germany since 2009 – said it expects to invest more that €2 million (US$2.18 million) in the project and generate sales of more than €60 million (US$65.4 million) across the ten-year concession.

One of the Areas openings at Dresden rail station will be from the popular Italian brand, Eataly

By early 2024, Areas will open an Eataly venue, which will make its Germany debut with an offer of typical Italian dishes such as pizza and pasta plus a coffee area; a Burger King; and a restaurant offering local German cuisine.

Areas CEO Oscar Vela said: “This agreement at the Dresden station is key for the company, as it strengthens our position in the train stations in Germany. Our offer for travellers at this emblematic station is of high quality, and we are very pleased to open our first Eataly in the country.”

Areas noted the growth prospects of the Germany market, which is the European country with the highest level of rail passengers. It currently has a team of 2,000 employees and 198 establishments located in airports, travel plazas, train stations and leisure developments across the country.

In the motorway market, Areas acquired the AXXE brand in Germany in 2012, through which it operates 22 travel plazas. It also manages stores at Checkpoint Charlie in Berlin, Potsdam Central Station, Leipzig Airport, the Alexa shopping centre in Berlin and six Center Parcs locations. ✈
