Australian market leads passenger growth at Auckland Airport

NEW ZEALAND. Auckland Airport’s international passenger movements (excluding transits) grew +4.8% to 687,996 in January 2011.

Short-haul traffic was strong with the Australian market growing by +8.4% and Pacific Island markets by +3.8%, the airport said.

Queenstown Airport has grown its 12-month rolling international passenger numbers by +49.2%. New services, including additional Australian Jetstar flights commencing in December 2010, continue to benefit international travel to and from the region.

Mackay Airport posted strong domestic passenger growth in January 2011 (+24.9%) as the extended closure of Rockhampton Airport saw some passengers change routes to Mackay.

As a result of the devastating earthquake in Christchurch, the breakdown of visitor arrivals by country of last residence for the month of January 2011 is unavailable from Statistics New Zealand.
