INDONESIA. Avolta has secured a new duty-free concession for two stores at Kualanamu International Airport, serving the city of Medan and North Sumatra province.

Avolta (formerly Dufry and Autogrill) has been operating in Indonesia for more than ten years, now boasting nearly 50 stores and food & beverage outlets.

The contract, Avolta’s first in Meda, marks the company’s third location in Indonesia, Southeast Asia’s largest economy and the world’s fourth-most populous nation. Kualanamu International Airport served 8 million passengers in pre-pandemic 2019, according to IATA.

As reported, GMR Airports Netherlands, a subsidiary of GMR Airports Limited, struck a 25-year deal in December 2021 to develop and operate Kualanamu International Airport in a 49:51 partnership with the state-owned airport authority.

Avolta has long-established businesses at Indonesia’s two main international gateways, Soekarno–Hatta International and I Gusti Ngurah Rai airports in Jakarta and Bali, respectively.

The Kualanamu duty-free business will commence operations this July, kicking off with a temporary 350sq m departures store immediately post-security and a near-300sq m arrivals store directly after immigration.

The final departures store will open following an upgrade of the airport terminal – a maximum of two years after the contract start date. This will increase floorspace to 650sq m and transform it into a walk-through store. From this time, both contracts will run for five years.

Avolta said the new stores are designed to cater to the diverse needs of travellers, offering a wide selection of products across all core categories including liquor, tobacco, perfumes & cosmetics and confectionery, along with a curated selection of sunglasses and travel essentials.

Avolta Managing Director South East Asia and Oceania David Mackay commented: “Our mission is to make travellers happier all over the world, and our offer will provide passengers with a convenient and luxurious shopping experience at Medan International Airport. We’re excited to work with our partners at [airport authority] Angkasa Pura Aviasi in their ambitious terminal enhancement plans and thank them for the trust they have placed in us.

“We are sure that our diverse product range, including top international brands and local favourites, means that there is something for everyone, whether you’re looking for a last-minute gift or indulging in some personal shopping.”

PT Angkasa Pura Aviasi Director Commercial & Business Development Kedar Deshpande said: “Kualanamu International Airport enjoys unique geographical advantage and a strong air traffic base driven by the vibrance of the economy of Medan city and the North Sumatra region. As the airport grows as the western international hub of Indonesia, we believe that now is the right time for joining hands with like-minded business partners to develop the crucial non-aeronautical business of the airport with a long-term view in mind.

“By joining forces with a strong partner with a global footprint like Avolta, we are very confident of bringing best in class and a never-before-in-Medan width of duty free offerings at both arrival and departure in a unique walk-through concept.

“We hope to provide our growing international passengers at the airport, be they tourists or business travellers, an immersive and unique shopping experience, that will elevate their comfortable travel through our airport to the next level.” ✈
