UK. BAA has appointed Stephen Nelson as its new Retail Director. He is expected to take up his role early this autumn.

Nelson, aged 42, is currently Marketing Director of UK supermarket group J Sainsbury and a member of its Operating Board. He succeeds former BAA Group Retail Director Brian Collie, who left the UK airports company at the end of March.

Nelson will join the group’s Executive Committee, which is responsible for the operational management of BAA. As Retail Director, he will be responsible for the growth and profitability of all BAA’s retail activities.

He is also charged with developing new income streams, and leveraging and building brand value.

BAA leads the world in airport retailing and in the first nine months of its financial year reported net retail income of £457 million.

Nelson joined Sainsbury’s in July 2003 from Diageo where he held a number of commercial roles.

BAA Chief Executive Mike Clasper commented: “I am delighted that Stephen Nelson has joined BAA. He has strong retail, marketing and commercial experience which will be of immense value to BAA as we look to build on our great track record in airport retailing. I am confident that Stephen will be a major addition to our leadership team.”
