Basel-Mulhouse seeks new retail concepts as low cost carriers provide passenger boom – 12/07/05

SWITZERLAND. EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg is seeking to open approximately 20 new stores to service a boom in passenger numbers, driven mainly by low cost carriers.

Commercial Director Werner Parini told The Moodie Report that some 1,500sq m has been allocated for new openings, incorporating 28 lots. As some lots may be combined, around 20 new shops are expected to be created.

“We are looking for any kind of shops – there are no limitations except for food & beverage which are being served by Carestel/Restair and SSP.”

Most of the new shops will be located landside, Parini said. The opening of a new terminal has created a lot of new landside spaces on both the French and Swiss side of the airport, he added.

Some shops are airside and will be in “direct competition” to Dufry which is the main airport retailer. All landside shops are duty paid, airside is duty free.

Parini said the retail opportunities are considerable. “We are experiencing a strong growth, especially with low cost airlines. easyjet and Sky Europe are our low cost carriers. In the first semester passengers were up more than +25% compared to 2004. We think this growth is sustainable and therefore we anticipate good results for retailers.”

The deadline for proposals is noon on 31 August. Documents for submissions can be requested from the following address:
