INDIA. Bengaluru International Airport (BIAL) has pledged its support for The Joy of Giving, a national initiative that aims to engage citizens in different selfless “˜acts of giving’, through a series of airport activities.
The Joy of Giving Week takes place from 27 September to 4 October 2009, and the entire nation including celebrities, corporate organisations and NGOs are encouraged to donate their resources, time, money and skills.
BIAL has set up contribution boxes at five locations within the airport, providing the opportunity for employees and passengers alike to give in kind or cash, from as low as Rs 1 (US$0.02). Since its inception, the boxes have been filling up with books, toys, pencil boxes, school bags and cash from generous donors, BIAL said.
BIAL has also organised the Blood Donation Camp, which was inaugurated by film actress Pooja Gandhi this week. “If it’s in your blood to give, you might as well” reads the tagline communicated around the airport – and firefighters, airline staff, CISF (Central Industrial Security Force) personnel and the airports operations team have all signed on to participate.
BIAL Chief Operations Officer Hari Marar said: “During this entire week, the airport, its partners as well as passengers have been encouraged to donate generously towards necessities that will aid schools such as Morning Star, Visthar, the National Association for the Blind (NAB), and the Rotary Club.
“We believe that this platform gives each one of us the opportunity to reach out and do something good. More importantly, it offers us the chance to use the power of collective action to make a difference.”
Through the week, the airport will also be playing host to the NGOs it is supporting through this initiative.
NAB CEO M Srinivas said: “We are grateful to Bengaluru International Airport for having organised this initiative for supporting the differently abled, especially the blind.
“This initiative will create awareness among passengers and airport staff about NAB and that will go a long way in helping us educate, rehabilitate and make our members independent in society.”
The Rotary Club’s Dr Radhakrishna said: “It is heartening to see the Bengaluru International Airport come forward and support us in such a noble cause. The blood donation camp is being organised in association with the Rotary Club, Yelahanka for Victoria hospital.
“By celebrating the Joy of Giving Week, the airport is joining millions nationally to do something worthy for a cause i.e. simply giving.”
