Bengaluru Kempegowda International Airport postpones launch of T2 international operations

The addition of international travellers to the new T2 Bengaluru Kempegowda International Airport will have a transformative impact on commercial operations

INDIA. Bengaluru Kempegowda International Airport, which announced plans to launch international operations at its Terminal 2 tomorrow, has confirmed postponement to a later date.

The new facility, developed by Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), was officially inaugurated in November 2022.

Singapore Airlines flight SQ508/SQ509 between Singapore and Bengaluru was due to be the first flight to land in the international zone on 31 August. All international flights from T1, arrivals and departures, scheduled for tomorrow were set to be moved to the new terminal.

But this evening, the airport company issued this statement: “The proposed shifting of International operations to Terminal 2 at Kempegowda International Airport Bengaluru on August 31, 2023, stands postponed. After consulting all regulatory authorities, BIAL will release a firm date for transition of international operations tomorrow.

“The last-minute decision was taken during the final preparedness review in order to provide an optimal and seamless transition for our passengers International operations will continue to remain in Terminal 1 until further notice. We regret the inconvenience caused by this decision and appreciate your patience and understanding as we work towards creating the best possible travel experience for our passengers. We request all International passengers to reach out to their respective airlines for any further information.”

The 255,661 sq m facility will eventually operate 30 to 35 daily international departures of 27 airlines (25 international and two domestic).

BIAL Managing Director & CEO Hari Marar said earlier: “The commencement of international operations at Terminal 2 represents a major milestone for BLR Airport. With this move, international operations will be exclusive to T2, while our domestic operations will be divided between T1 and T2.

“We are committed to providing our passengers with an unparalleled travel experience, and T2 reflects our dedication to delivering world-class facilities and services. With our expanded international operations, we look forward to strengthening Bengaluru’s connectivity to the rest of the world.”

The airport company added that the start of the international operations at T2 is in response to the increasing passenger traffic and to enhance the overall passenger experience.

The modern infrastructure features advanced technology and passenger-centric amenities including spacious check-in counters and self-service baggage drop.

The airport company said that travellers can expect simplified transfers, immigration clearance and customs procedures at the new terminal.

Terminal 2 is located on the northeastern side of T1 and features two-level domestic and international retail and lounge areas.

Its commercial space includes 110 retail and F&B outlets managed by a range of partners. The airport company noted that these retail units are set to open in the next few months.

As reported, Dufry secured a 15-year contract to manage duty free outlets in the new terminal under a 50:50 joint venture with BIAL. The leading travel retailer has been present at the location since 2008, initially through a contract won by The Nuance Group.

Dufry’s HMSHost International has also been awarded contracts to operate 24 outlets at the airport, including 14 outlets at the new terminal and ten new stores in T1.

The global travel restaurateur said that the selection of brands will highlight Bengaluru as the tech capital of the region while putting focus on its commitment to sustainability through the use of re-used and sustainable materials in construction.

To enhance accessibility to T2, an additional 4.4km-long access road called the Terminal Boulevard was opened earlier this year.

This road is linked to T2 departures and arrivals, allowing an easier drive without any traffic signals.

T2 has a parking area for passengers and complimentary shuttle services available at regular intervals between T1 and T2. ✈
