Bodegas Torres introduces its first Rioja wine – 18/03/09

Ibéricos is a crianza made 100% from the Tempranillo variety in La Rioja appellation

SPAIN. Leading Spanish winemaker Bodegas Torres has launched its first Rioja wine, Ibéricos. A crianza made 100% from the Tempranillo variety, the wine is aged for 12 months in American and French oak casks and then a further six months in the bottle.

The product is called Ibéricos because it is evocative of the Iberian mainland and the imposing mountain system that borders the region of La Rioja. It is also in homage to the Iberians, who had a rich culture, their own writing system and coinage and who worshipped various gods.

The Torres winery in La Rioja is located in La Rioja Alavesa, in the municipality of Labastida (1,271 metres above sea level), in an area called Alto Otero. The first phase of the complex covers 7,800sq m and includes a pressing zone and a bottle ageing zone. The final part of the project is currently under way, consisting of integrating the winery into its environment. In the medium term it is also planned to install a blanket of solar panels on the winery’s roof, which will help to waterproof the building and also provide solar energy.

Some 480,000 bottles have been produced from the 2006 harvest and production is expected to double over the next two years. Ibéricos went on sale in Spain from March 2009.
