ITALY. Distilleria Bottega has awarded the Alexander Prize to Giovanni Di Lorenzo, editor-in-chief of the German magazine Die Zeit.
The award is part of the International Ischia Prize for Journalism and the prize is an oversized blown-glass bottle of grappa. Inside the bottle is a reproduction goose quill.
The award ceremony was introduced by Franco Di Mare, anchorman of Italy’s Rai television channel, at the end of the convention “Italy’s South: back in discussion”.
Among the speakers at the event, held on the island of Ischia, were Mario Landolfi, Italy’s Minister of Communications, and three top journalists, namely Paolo Gambescia, Pierluigi Magnaschi and Mario Pirani.
Previous prizewinners have included Peter Stothard, former editor of The Times newspaper in the UK, and Jean Marie Colombani, chief editor of Le Monde in France.
Distilleria Bottega, which has attended the event for ten consecutive years, explained that the goose quill was a symbol of man’s earliest times using a natural implement to write, and is a homage to journalism.
