Canada’s airport and land border duty free stores see strong September

CANADA. The growth trend in sales at Canada’s airport duty free stores continued in September, with a +12% increase recorded compared to the same month in 2014.

The overall sales figure for September 2015 was C$33.9 million. For the year to date, a +18% increase year-on-year was recorded, with sales at airport duty free shops totalling C$285 million.

Total land border duty free sales for September 2015 increased +17% to C$14.6 million. In Ontario and Quebec, where many land border duty free stores are located, respective +21% and +18% sales increases were recorded during the month.

The growth was attributed to the fact that Labour Day fell in the month of September as opposed to the last weekend in August, along with an increase in American tourists due to a favourable exchange rate.

Year to date land border duty free sales rose +3.88% compared to the year-before period, totalling C$111 million.
