Canadian duty free industry closes 2011 with US$377 million in sales

CANADA. The Canadian airport and land border duty free industry posted overall sales of C$376 million (US$377 million) for the year 2011.

National airport duty free sales totaled C$234 million for the January-December 2011 period, a rise of +16% compared to the previous year. The month of December saw airport sales increase +27% to C$24 million.

National land border duty free sales grew a marginal +0.68% to C$142 million in the year, with sales in December amounting to C$11.5 million, an increase of +7.6%.

The figures were provided by the Canadian Border Services Agency and released by the Frontier Duty Free Association.

Regional Sales Figures – Land Border (Canada):

Prairie Region: The Prairie region saw sales of approximately C$752,000 in December 2011, an increase of +4% year on year. Sales for the year totalled C$10 million, declining -1.39% compared to the previous year.

Pacific Region: Sales in the Pacific region grew +1.44% to C$1.9 million in December 2011. For the January-December 2011 period, sales hit C$24 million – an increase of approximately +5% compared to the previous year.

Ontario: Sales saw a year-on-year rise of +11.5% to C$6.9 million. For 2011, sales totalled C$79.6 million with slight growth of around +0.26%.

Atlantic/Quebec: The sales figure for Atlantic/Quebec for December 2011 was C$1.8 million, an increase of +1.93% compared to December 2010. Sales in the year 2011 amounted to C$28.9 million with a slight decline of -0.81%.

11. Office and Travel Supplies
12. Other
13. Crafts/Arts
14. Electronics, Cameras, Binoculars, etc.
