The rugged dial of the Hurricane by CX Swiss Military Watch evokes the artificial horizon in a cockpit, while the small second hand is shaped like a propeller |
SWITZERLAND. On the 70th anniversary of the beginning of the Battle of Britain, Montres Charmex SA has introduced a pilot’s watch to commemorate the Royal Air Force’s Hurricane aircraft.
Based on the company’s Airforce I model, the limited-edition Hurricane by CX Swiss Military Watch is equipped with a chronometer-certified automatic chronograph. The stainless steel case is scratch-resistant thanks to a diamond-like black coating (DLC).
The bezel is designed as a fully functional circular slide rule and is anti-magnetic, enabling all aeronautical calculations. The anti-reflective sapphire crystal protects a rugged dial evoking the artificial horizon in a cockpit. The small second hand is shaped like a propeller.
A new development is the nanotech Swiss-made leather strap, described as nearly impermeable and long-lasting. The solid stainless steel buckle, also in DLC, bears the CX Swiss Military Watch logo.
The oversized pilot’s crown and the pushers are screw-down and the Hurricane is water resistant to 200 metres. The red colour of the pushers disappears once they are screwed-in and the watch is fully water-resistant.
Four dial colours are available (silver, black, RAF red and blue) and the watch is sold in a luxurious wooden gift box. The model is produced in a limited edition of 200, and carries a retail price in Switzerland of CHF1,995.
About the Battle of Britain
10 July 1940 marked the beginning of the Battle of Britain, the epic fight between the German Luftwaffe and the British Royal Air Force (RAF).
The RAF’s Hurricane bore the brunt of the battle that lasted from 10 July 1940 to 31 October 1940. A single-engine aircraft equipped with eight Browning 303 machine guns, the Hurricane proved a formidable foe despite being slower than the German Messerschmitt.
Despite the abilities of the Spitfire aircraft, it was the Hurricane that scored the highest number of RAF victories during this period and is known as the plane “never known to fail”.
