CHINA. Following the announcement of its new agreement with Star Cruises via The Moodie Report late last year, China Duty Free Group (CDFG) has just signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Star Cruises parent company Genting Hong Kong to “develop duty free retail business.”
The cruise retail business represents a landmark ninth type of duty free business for CDFG, and a further step in the group’s domestic and international diversification policy.
The MOU was signed on 1 February in Sanya, where Star Cruises’ SuperStar Gemini is currently based.
The SuperStar Gemini Duty Free Store, which has a business area of about 600sq m, is the first comprehensive flagship duty free shopping precinct is the first of the cruise fleet to host CDFG retailing.
Categories represented will be fragrances and cosmetics, tobacco, liquor, jewellery, leathergoods, sunglasses and watches, with brands including Burberry, Gucci, Hugo Boss, Prada, Camus, Hennessy and Rémy Martin.

According to a CDFG spokesperson, in the first half of this year 12 duty-free shops will open on 5 Star Cruises vessels, representing a total duty free area of 1600sq m.
“In the future, all the duty free stores on luxury cruise ships like Star Pisces, SuperStar Aquarius, SuperStar Virgo, and SuperStar Libra operated by Star Cruise in the Asia-Pacific region will be exclusively supplied with goods and operated by CDFG.”
The deal consolidates CDFG’s burgeoning duty free business in China.
CDFG – under the name Star Cruises Onboard Duty Free Store – launched the agreement by selling duty free products onboard Star Pisces cruise liners berthing at Hong Kong’s Tsim Sha Tsui Ferry Pier. The shop offers goods including cigarettes, liquor, fragrances and cosmetics.
Eventually CDFG will offer duty free commodities and undertake operational management of duty free stores across the entire Star Cruises fleet, under the unified China Duty Free logo.
Genting Hong Kong is an arm of the Genting Group, whose brands include Star Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line and RWM. Star Cruises, together with Norwegian Cruise Line is the world’s third-largest cruise company, operating 18 cruise routes to over 200 destinations around the world.

CDFG’s entry into cruise ship shops marks its ninth duty free business channel, following airport, onboard, border, foreign vessel, passenger station, railway station, diplomatic agent and urban duty free stores, giving it the most comprehensive duty free store types and most retail outlets of each type in China.
“In recent years, CDFG has been busy with the layout of the tourism retail and overseas expansion so as to accelerate the close communication with the international duty free industry and tourism retail industry and strive to push forward the diversified international development of China’s duty free industry,” the spokesperson said.
“The Letter of Intent for Strategic Cooperation signed by and between CDFG and Genting, a well-known transnational tourism group, symbolises another solid step by CDFG towards diversified international development.”
