China opens up: Hainan Expo to take place in March 2021

CHINA. Hainan is set to host a major international Expo next March to underline the island province’s and China’s opening up to the world.

The Hainan Provincial Bureau of International Economic Development today revealed details of the China International Consumer Products Expo (Hainan Expo) to be held in March 2021 (final dates to be confirmed).

The mega event is themed ‘Hainan, a Pioneer of Opening-up in China’. It is designed to underline China’s commitment to expand opening-up and to share business opportunities with the rest of the world. The Moodie Davitt Report will be attending the Expo and providing extensive coverage from now through to the event itself.

The Expo will affirm Hainan’s ambitions to become an International Tourism and Consumption Center. Chinese authorities this month released a master plan to boost the building of the Hainan Free Trade Port, auguring a wave of investment opportunities for international enterprises – including high-end duty free, department store and luxury retailers.

As reported, the development of Hainan offers rich opportunities for the travel retail sector. During phase one, the annual offshore duty free allowance for shoppers visiting the island is to be raised from RMB30,000 (US$4,215 at current exchange rates) to RMB100,000 (US$14,050) while the range of duty free categories is also being expanded. In phase two, all taxes and duties will be removed island-wide.

All eyes turn to Hainan as a hugely ambitious Free Trade Port project takes shape

“We sincerely welcome friends from all over the world to participate in Hainan Expo and share the fruits brought by the construction of the Free Trade Port, said Ruslan Tulenov, Supervisor at Hainan Provincial Bureau of International Economic Development.

The extraordinary Ocean Flower Island is one of many examples of huge investment being poured into tourism infrastructure on Hainan, while it also augurs a likely opening up of the duty free retail industry. As reported, global travel retail leader Dufry is reliably understood to have signed a partnership agreement with real estate giant Evergrande Group on 13 April to create a duty free city on the island [Dufry declined to comment when contacted by The Moodie Davitt Report]. The project will feature over 200 internationally renowned brands, including 12 Michelin-starred restaurants. The entertainment site will house marine museums, fantasy dramas customised by world-famous directors, five-star resort hotels, duty free shopping malls, theme parks and much more. (Image: InterPark)
With Chinese domestic tourism set to soar in coming years, and the offshore duty free allowance being more than tripled, China Duty Free Group is accelerating the completion of the magnificent Haikou International Duty Free Mall on Hainan island. The project, which began in 2019, will be completed within three years.
