China posts double-digit arrivals growth in July – 30/08/05

CHINA. The number of visitors arriving in China continue to grow strongly through the summer, with about 10.8 million arrivals posted in July, up +12.2% year-on-year.

Foreigners made up 1.7 million of these visitors, an increase of +18.9% over last July; Hong Kong residents made up 6.3 million, a growth of +6.9%; Macau residents numbered 2.4 million, up +23.6%; and Taiwanese arrivals numbered 394,900, an increase of +11.2%.

Between January and July, about 69.1 million arrivals were posted, an increase of +13.2% year-on-year.

Arrivals by foreigners posted the highest percentage growth at +27.2%. Macau residents posted the next highest growth with +25.5%. But in real numbers, Hong Kong residents still dominate. Some 6.3 million arrivals from this group were registered over the period.

All 16 of China’s largest arrivals markets recorded double-digit growth over the period of January to July, with Thailand leading at +40.6%, followed by France +49.5% and Malaysia +37.7%.

In July alone, all but Japan posted double-digit growth, with the largest percentage growth coming from Russia +50.3%, Thailand +37.2% and France +33.7%. Affected by the recent Sino-Japanese tensions, Japanese arrivals fell -8.9% compared to last July.
