Chinese New Year traffic grows +15% at Macau International Airport

MACAU. Macau International Airport handled 79,875 passengers in the first five days of Chinese New Year (10-14 February 2013), a rise of +15% over the corresponding Chinese New Year period last year (23-27 January 2012).

In particular, passenger volume surpassed the 17,000 mark on both 13 and 14 February. “With the economy consistently behaving well locally and in surrounding areas, Macau citizens tend to travel outbound to celebrate the seasonal festival, [which] coincided with Valentine’s Day,” Macau International Airport explained.

Airlines had also scheduled extra flights to depart and arrive over the festive season: The same comparative five-day period saw aircraft movements increase by +19% to 677 this year.

To create some festive cheer for travellers, Macau International Airport embellished the terminal building with traditional Chinese New Year decorations. The “˜God of Wealth’ also made an appearance from 10-13 February, distributing candies symbolising good fortune for the Snake Year.

With the 6 February launch of the Macau-Wenzhou route offering three weekly flight services, as well as the Express Link connection service, Macau International Airport foresees “continuous growth” for the rest of February.
