Chubu Centrair Airport duty free sales fall sharply in second half on COVID-19 impact

JAPAN. Chubu Centrair International Airport duty free sales fell by -11% year-on-year in the six months to 31 March, mainly as a result of the impact of COVID-19 on traffic and spend in the final quarter.

Duty free sales in the half hit JPY10,136 million (US$94.2 million). Commercial sales overall fell -12% to JPY16,604 million (US$154.3 million) as passenger traffic fell by -9% to 5.6 million.

For the financial year, traffic rose by +2% to 12.6 million, with duty free sales also rising +2% to reach JPY24,251 million (US$225.4 million). Commercial sales overall climbed by +1% to JPY38,701 million (US$360 million).

In March, the month worst affected by the crisis, traffic fell by -71% year-on-year (including international by -89%), with duty free sales down by -93% on the same month last year.
