INTERNATIONAL. Which retailers at which airports embody best practice in their respective categories? How would the commercial offer at a hypothetical airport take shape if it was populated by those retailers that most stood for innovation, partnership and their understanding of the consumer?
In a survey conducted over the last three months, The Moodie Report has attempted to answer these questions, and on the basis of the replies – from leading brand owners around the travel retail world – created what we call our “˜Dreamstore’. We believe it provides a real reflection of excellence among the world’s leading airport retailers today, across the core categories of fragrances & cosmetics, liquor, tobacco, confectionery and fashion & accessories (including sunglasses, jewellery and watches).
We’ll be releasing the results in a special edition of The Moodie Report e-Zine very soon (complete with images and video of the top-ranked locations), and we can promise those results make fascinating reading. The project itself has generated huge interest – and many, many responses – among brand owners. We’re also delighted to welcome the support of a number of category sponsors to date: Bacardi Global Travel Retail (liquor), JTI (tobacco), Kraft Foods World Travel Retail (confectionery) and Lacoste (fashion & accessories).
In the survey we asked brands to nominate their choice of the best single airport retailer for a specific category at a specific airport location, judged by a specific set of criteria that focused on advancing the industry as a whole.
We asked suppliers which retailers in their category (over the past year):
• Did most to understand and reach out to their consumer
• Did most to grow the business
• Did most to add value to the duty free and travel retail proposition
• Most stood for innovation
• Most stood for partnership
• Did most to grow the business
• Were most open to new ideas and creative thinking about their category
• And any other criteria they deemed key to best practice
This is the third edition of Dreamstore after previous editions in 2008 and last year. In the 2010/11 edition, the winners (click here for full results and brand owners’ comments) were as follows:
