COVID-19 forces delay to San Francisco International’s US$1 billion Terminal 3 West project

USA. San Francisco International Airport’s US$1 billion Terminal 3 West project – which includes substantial new food & beverage and retail space – will now not open earlier than the spring of 2024 after construction work was delayed for at least six months.

The start of construction had been scheduled for June this year, but dramatically reduced passenger and flight activity resulting from the COVID-19 crisis has forced a postponement.

On hold: The Terminal 3 West project at San Francisco International will include new passenger amenities and add to the airport’s international fight capacity

The Terminal 3 West project will renovate the existing 400,000sq ft western half of the terminal, including new architectural finishes and passenger amenities. The project will also create 190,000sq ft of additional space allocated for expanded food & beverage and retail concessions.

Terminal 3 currently hosts United Airlines, from which the carrier operates US domestic flights. The new project will also see aircraft gates reconfigured to accommodate international flights, which will be linked to the customs facility through a new elevated secure connector.

The airport said that about 75% of design and enabling activities have been finalised, including the relocation of utilities and existing tenants.

Upgrades in other areas of Terminal 3 have already been completed. In January 2014, the airport reopened the renovated Boarding Area E with ten gates for United Airlines. In November 2015, the renovated Terminal 3 East concourse opened with three aircraft gates, a consolidated central security checkpoint and a new United Club location.
