Dan Cappell: “Outstanding industry experience and expertise” |
ABU DHABI, UAE. Dan Cappell is to join Abu Dhabi Airports Company (ADAC) as General Manager Duty Free and Acting Commercial Director, effective November 2007.
Cappell, one of the duty free sector’s most experienced executives, is leaving his current post as General Manager Operations Aer Rianta International-Middle East (ARI-ME) to join the highly ambitious ADAC.
Cappell is no stranger to Abu Dhabi International Airport, having joined Bahrain-based ARI-ME in June 2006 from Abu Dhabi Duty Free where he was Deputy Managing Director.

ADAC is a public joint-stock company wholly owned by the Abu Dhabi Government. It is charged with spearheading the development of Abu Dhabi’s aviation infrastructure (see Factfile below).
ADAC took over the operation and management of Abu Dhabi and Al Ain international Airports in September 2006.
Its mandate covers the re-development and expansion of Abu Dhabi International Airport, which includes the exciting new midfield terminal. This facility is designed to increase the overall capacity of the airport to 20 million passengers by 2010.
H.E. Khalifa Al Mazrouei, Chairman and Managing Director of ADAC said: “ADAC is delighted to announce the appointment of such a well-known and high calibre executive as Dan Cappell. Dan has outstanding industry experience and expertise, and will help deliver the exciting vision we have for ADAC in the future.
“We thank Niveen Ibrahim for her long and loyal service to Abu Dhabi Duty Free and wish her all the best for the future.”
ARI-ME Managing Director John Sutcliffe said he was sorry to lose Dan Cappell but wished him well in his new challenge. “I’m delighted for Dan personally,” he said. “First and foremost he’s a good friend and has been for 14 years. I’m very sorry to lose him but this is one of those opportunities in your career that you simply have to take.
“He will be involved with a very major industry dynamic considering all that Abu Dhabi Airports Company is seeking to achieve. I’m very happy that he is staying in the region as he has contributed so much to it.” [Also see related story: Sutcliffe seeks “˜high calibre’ replacement for key regional role]
ADAC: World-class outlook |
ABOUT ABU DHABI AIRPORTS COMPANY Abu Dhabi Airports Company (ADAC) is a public joint-stock company incorporated on 4 March 2006, to spearhead the development of the Emirate’s aviation industry.
Its mandate is four-fold:
• To operate and maintain airports facilities and infrastructure to world-class standards;
• To oversee airport services rendered by private firms and other stakeholders;
• To provide the Emirate’s airports with technical and management services to appropriate international standards of efficiency;
• To establish and run free zones.
ADAC’s creation was in tandem with an ambitious restructuring initiative launched by the Government of Abu Dhabi, aimed at delivering better government services to support the Emirate’s long-term strategy to transform into a centre for business and tourism.
ADAC incorporates Abu Dhabi Duty Free (ADDF). Established in 1984 with just five shops, ADDF has grown into a multi-award winning travel retail organization and one of the largest in the region.
From early 2008, additional retail space will be added at Abu Dhabi International Airport with the new Terminal 3 development. With the growing number of flights and routes coming through Abu Dhabi’s airports in the short to medium term, ADDF is set to become one of the world’s fastest growing travel retail operations over the next decade.
ADDF services extend across the Emirate with operations at Abu Dhabi International Airport, Al Ain International Airport, and the Ghweifat land-border outlet between the UAE and KSA.
