Diageo Global Travel has unveiled customisable Johnnie Walker City Bags in travel retail, which will be rolled out at airport shops worldwide.
These Green Leaf certified bags are fully reusable and made from 100% recycled post-consumer polyester. City Bags can be adapted for different cities, adding a souvenir component to purchasing a bottle of Johnnie Walker at the airport. Diageo has decided to phase out the use of cardboard boxes for packaging its key Scotch brands. The new bags offer a lower carbon alternative to traditional gifting and packaging methods, showcasing the retailer’s commitment to its 2030 net zero goal. Compared to a typical box package, the City Bag offers a 74% reduction in carbon emissions, emitting only 0.02kg of carbon dioxide.
Diageo Global Travel Managing Director Andrew Cowan commented: “Johnnie Walker is working towards net zero Scotch production by 2030. As committed as we are to reducing the impact of our meticulous distilling, maturing and blending in Scotland, we understand that our packaging is as important a focus. It has to appeal to our consumers, but it similarly has to be less and less physically impactful on our precious natural environment.
“The steps we are taking to consider the changes we need to make in packaging are many and complex. These City Bags are a small step along a journey we are on to consider the materials, the manufacturing process and the design of our bottle protection and gifting.” ✈
