Italian luxury house Dolce & Gabbana has announced that it will be taking back full control of its beauty business from Shiseido Group.

As reported by Vogue Business, Reuters and Financial Times, the company is establishing a new entity called Dolce & Gabbana Beauty which will assume 100% control of the manufacturing, sales and distribution of the brand’s makeup and fragrance portfolio by January 2023.

The Italian house’s move to take back control of its beauty business follows the conclusion of its licensing agreement with Shiseido Group in December 2021. As reported, the agreement came into effect in October 2016.

The partners agreed to partially terminate the licensing deal in April 2021 as Shiseido Group streamlined its business due to the impact of COVID-19. This is in line with Shiseido Group’s ‘WIN 2023 and Beyond’ strategy, which prioritises its investments in the brands, categories and regions that best support its competitive positioning and global growth.

As reported, Shiseido Americas recently completed the sale of bareMinerals, Buxom and Laura Mercier to AI Beauty Holdings, in line with this approach.

Dolce & Gabbana Beauty will be based in Milan. It will be helmed by Alfonso Dolce and Gianluca Toniolo. Dolce is the brother of Domenico Dolce, Dolce & Gabbana President and CEO. Toniolo, who was formerly Managing Director of Global Travel Retail at LVMH Perfumes & Cosmetics, joins as Operating CEO.
