UAE. Dubai Duty Free has begun accepting Indian Rupees to improve its service to passengers travelling to India.
Dubai’s two airports (DXB and Al Maktoum International) handled 12 million passengers travelling to various destinations in India last year, over 13% of total traffic.
“Sales to passengers travelling to India make up a significant portion of Dubai Duty Free’s business and it contributes to nearly 11% of our total business,” said Chief Operating Officer Ramesh Cidambi.
Cidambi said that the facility to make payment in Indian Rupees, launched on 1 July, is designed as another convenient option for Indian passengers rather than as an additional revenue source.
Those paying in Indian Rupees receive change in UAE Dirhams (only purchases in US Dollars, Euros and Pound Sterling receive change in the same currency).
The Indian Rupee is the 16th foreign currency accepted by Dubai Duty Free.
