Dufry on track for duty free store opening in Kinmen’s Wind Lion Plaza

TAIWAN. Taiwan Land Development Corporation (TLDC) has obtained a license from the Ministry of Finance for the Dufry-operated duty free store in the Wind Lion Plaza in Kinmen, according to a report by Taiwan’s national news agency CNA.

TLDC has confirmed the news to The Moodie Report, adding that the opening is on track for the first half of 2014.

As reported by The Moodie Report, the duty free store is a joint venture between TLDC and Dufry, serving as the anchor tenant in what is being hailed as the largest integrated entertainment, retail and dining complex on Kinmen Island.

TLDC-Dufry will operate 3,000sq m of duty free retail space in Wind Lion Plaza, offering liquor, tobacco, perfumes & cosmetics, fashion, accessories, watches and jewellery and confectionery.

The CNA report added that the store is eyeing an increase in tourists from China to initially generate business amid warming ties across the Taiwan Strait. In the longer term, it aims to tap into tourists from outside China, in particular from Southeast Asia.

TLDC Chairman Chiu Fu-sheng said Kinmen, located just 10km away from Xiamen, has gained “the upper hand” in developing closer business ties with the Chinese city.

Chiu added that figuring out how to attract more tourists from China to Kinmen will be one of the most important factors for the outlying county to make a breakthrough economically.

He believed that the Wind Lion Plaza, which aims to provide consumers with quality and reliable products from Taiwan and elsewhere, will serve as a magnet for Chinese tourists.

The Wind Lion Plaza covers over 244,000sq m of total space with attractions including hotels, a multi-functional entertainment centre, a convention and exhibition centre, and medical, health and beauty care facilities. Other services will include electronic shops, locally themed boutiques, themed restaurants, and the largest cineplex in Kinmen.
