USA. Denver International Airport has appointed a joint venture led by Dufry North America to operate its seven-year duty free concession.
The retailer’s Denver Duty Free operation is expected to begin trading in June 2015, and has projected sales of US$7.66 million in the first year.
The concession, originally tendered in October 2013, comprises 2,315sq ft of retail space in Concourse A, 2,328sq ft in Concourse B and 1,390sq ft in Concourse C. The retailer has the option of using the Concourse C space for duty free or speciality retail of fragrances, cosmetics and fashion accessories.

The nearly 6,000sq ft of space will be a dramatic extension compared with the just over 1,000sq ft currently operated by Nuance-led Liberty Duty Free.
Denver Duty Free will contribute projected annual rent of US$1.4 million to the airport and annual sales tax of around US$275,000 to the City of Denver.
Dufry North America holds 67% of the stock in Denver Duty Free, with disadvantaged business enterprises Odd Tale Books (23%) and Wystone’s World Teas Holdings (10%) holding the remainder.

The airport noted that international traffic at Denver had grown by +13% while overall traffic declined by -1%. For the year to May 2014 that trend has accelerated, with international passenger traffic growing +20%.
The airport has seen a +30% increase in the number of international destinations to which it offers non-stop routes over the past three years. Among the destinations are Tokyo, Reykjavik, Punta Cana, Montego Bay, Guadalajara, Chihuahua and Panama City.
