Dutch airline lets passengers order duty free from their own devices

The AirFi router sends a signal that smartphones, laptops and tablets can receive

NETHERLANDS. TUI Group’s ArkeFly airline is trialling a system which allows passengers to purchase duty free products onboard flights using their own tablet, phone or laptop.

The TUI Cloud wireless network, which is free to access, also allows passengers to watch movies on their own smart devices along with other activities.

The Arke Café online service is currently being tested on a number of flights, with passengers able to access a food and snacks inflight menu and duty free catalogue, and then place an order directly on their devices.

The Amsterdam-based airline said the TUI Cloud system worked through the use of an AirFi router, a box about the size of two packs of sugar. The router sends a signal that smartphones, laptops and tablets can receive. Passengers can turn on airplane mode and Wi-Fi on their own device after which they can read all the information that is on TUI Cloud.

Arke will also begin offering the TUI Cloud service at selected airports this autumn. At these airports, passengers at the gate will receive free access to certain online information and applications such as Facebook and WhatsApp via AirFi. Tests are also taking place to offer the service on transfer buses.
