The fast-growing airport, which serves the capital city of Iraqi Kurdistan, Erbil, saw a +52% growth in passenger numbers in the first four months of the year, with 84,275 passengers in April alone. At the current rate of growth the airport expects to see nearly 1 million passengers pass through its doors by year end.
As part of its development EIA is seeking a long term partner to help deliver an international standard food & beverage offer to the growing number of airport users.
Expressions of interest from companies are being sought ahead of a tender process which is expected to begin in July. Companies seeking to find out more about the potential offers are encouraged to visit EIA and understand for themselves the range of facilities available.
While small by international standards, the current passenger numbers represent a significant advance on predictions and numbers are set to continue to grow as new airlines launch services and existing carriers increase, EIA said. In late May, the airport welcomed Qatar Airways, with a four-times-a-week service to Doha. Services to Iran launched in June, as discussions continue with a range of charter and scheduled carriers.
Airport Director Talar Faiq said: “The exact design of the tender has yet to be finalised but ideally we are looking to an experienced food & beverage partner to help develop our offer, enhance revenues and provide an exciting range of brand offers.
“Kurdistan as a region continues to grow, and its safe environment presents an ideal opportunity for companies seeking to establish themselves where the potential across airports throughout the country is increasingly well documented.
“With flight times ranging from 50 minutes to Baghdad, to the longest route – Stockholm and Frankfurt – at around 4.5 hours, we want departing passengers, especially, to be able to enjoy a range of food and hospitality choices.
“We see the selection of a long-term partner in this area as part of our strategy to develop a truly international offer at the airport and in line with the best standards found in airports throughout the Middle East.
“I would encourage interested parties to register with us to ensure they have access to the tender when published. EIA is happy to accommodate site survey visits ahead of the tender publication and looks forward to welcoming interested parties.”
