POLAND. Warsaw Frederic Chopin Airport recorded a new monthly traffic high in June, welcoming 1.08 million passengers – a +17.2% increase on the same month last year. The month also brought a new record in aircraft movements, at over 14,500 (up by +14.3% year-on-year).
Warsaw’s previous monthly record, 1.02 million, was posted in July 2008.
The Euro 2012 football tournament, co-hosted by Poland and Ukraine, helped drive June passenger numbers at Warsaw, with domestic traffic posting especially high growth of +108% compared with June 2011.
Chopin Airport Director Michał Marzec commented: “We were expecting increased traffic and were well prepared for it. Despite the huge number of planes and passengers, the quality of service was as high as always and there were no capacity problems. This shows that our airport has a lot of room for growth and could handle much more passengers causing no additional disruption to the residents of Warsaw.”
Warsaw is Poland’s largest airport and welcomed 9.3 million passengers in 2011, or 43% of the country’s total air traffic. The main duty free retailers at the airport are Aelia/HDS Polska (part of LS travel retail) and Keraniss.
