Ever Rich gains major honour with National Civic Service Award

TAIWAN. In a major recognition of its commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility, Ever Rich Duty Free Shop Corporation has received the prestigious National Civic Service Award from the Premier of Taiwan Executive Yuan, Wu Den-yih.

The award, now in its ninth year, honours individuals and groups that make charitable contributions and promote humanitarian activities. It was presented at a glittering ceremony on 2 November. Ever Rich was the only with-profit institution to win the award, sharing the spotlight with three individuals and eight non-profit institutions.

This year, over 300 groups and individuals were nominated for the awards, organized by The Federation of Non-Profit Associations.

Ever Rich President Simon Chiang said he was very appreciative of the recognition by his country. He said the honour will encourage and extend the company’s commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility.

He urged others to participate more in civic service, to help strengthen society and to spread love and consideration to everyone in need. Ma Ying-Jeuo, President of the Republic of China, met with Simon Chiang and the other eleven awardees and praised their virtue and morality, which he suggested could form a pattern for everyone to follow.

Simon Chiang said: “Love is the most beautiful thing and practising charity is the most joyful.”

EVER RICH AND CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

Ever Rich Corporation has established three national charitable Foundations which the company funds. These promote charity work based on the philosophy of “˜what is earned from society should be used on society’.

These Foundations offer immediate aid for natural disasters within Taiwan and abroad. Some NT$20 million (US$662,000) was donated after the Morakot typhoon; 30 tonnes of supplies were sent after the major floods on 8 August; various charity events were held to stimulate public support and further funding for those disasters; and emergency aid was generated after the Toraji typhoon and earthquake on 21 September.

For international disasters, the company Foundations donated NT$16.87 million (US$560,000) in cash and supplies after the 11 March earthquake in Japan; and earlier it contributed US$100,000 to travel retail industry charity Hand in Hand for Haiti after the January 2010 earthquake in Haiti.

It also donated over NT$5 million (US$165,000) after the earthquake in Sichuan and the Myanmar typhoon; and NT$15 million (US$497 million) of emergency funds and 50 prefabricated houses for the tsunami victims. The company also hosted the Annual International Medical Conference for Urology for Women, and co-hosted the Create Hope and Miracles Event of Orbis Foundation.

Apart from these charity works, the company is synonymous with hosting cultural events, workshops and exhibitions that support the country’s culture and benefit the tourism industry. Ever Rich also offers a number of education scholarships. The company’s 3,600 employees regularly form voluntary groups to care for others, for example paying constant visits to orphanages and nursing homes, offering supplies and funds, cleaning up the environment, and spending holidays with children and the elderly.
