Flemingo consolidates Indian dominance with victory in regional duty free tenders – 01/06/09

INDIA. Flemingo has swept the board in a series of regional airport duty free tenders conducted by Airports Authority of India.

One tender covered Chennai, Ahmedabad, Calicut and Goa airports; the other included Trivandrum, Jaipur, Lucknow and Amritsar airports. The tenders were for second retailer status except at smaller airports Lucknow and Jaipur (neither of which attracted any offers).

Flemingo India was the sole bidder in Amritsar and Ahmadabad and the highest bidder in Chennai, Trivandrum, Calicut and Goa.

Its only rival, state-owned duty free retailer ITDC, bid for Chennai, Trivandrum, Calicut and Goa airports but was unsuccessful in each case.

Flemingo already operates the main duty free concessions at most of the airports and those operations were unaffected by the tenders.

A decision is expected early this month on the tender for a joint-venture duty free contract at Indira Gandhi International Airport’s new Terminal 3, due to open in 2010.

As revealed by The Moodie Report, Dufry/Interglobe, Flemingo (under legal protest), Setur, Aldeasa, and Aer Rianta International in partnership with local company IDFS, have all submitted bids.
