Frankfurt Airport App ensures nothing is lost in translation

GERMANY. Reading foreign language signs at the airport can be a struggle for some, potentially turning the passenger experience into a nightmare – but not at Frankfurt Airport where a new App translates signage for global travellers.

The latest version of the Frankfurt Airport App features a new “˜SignTranslator’ function, which enables passengers to photograph any sign in German to receive a translation in one of six languages: Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Russian and Spanish.

Although all signs at the airport are provided in both German and English, operator Fraport said many travellers were more comfortable reading signs in their native language.

Fraport also said the new feature would make the App more valuable as a personal airport guide. The free App, which is available from the Apple Store and Google Play, can be used as a map tool so that passengers can find their way around the airport, and provides information on flights.

SignTranslator is the latest example of Fraport’s service quality programme at the airport called “˜Great to have you here!’ which seeks to continually enhance the travel experience. Free 24-hour Wi-Fi Internet access was also recently launched in the passenger terminals as part of the programme.
