Gatwick responds to passenger demand with wagamama opening

UK. London Gatwick Airport will welcome Japanese restaurant chain wagamama to its North Terminal next year after the brand was identified as the one passengers most wanted to see at the airport.

One third of the 1,002 respondents to Gatwick’s Food and Beverage Strategy Market Research study, conducted in April, put wagamama at the top of a list of food & beverage brands they would be likely to use if available.

The restaurant will open in summer 2015, featuring its usual communal eating area and open kitchen format. The airport outlet will offer a breakfast menu, a takeaway counter and a pre-order facility. It will also offer a fast payment app.

Other features include USB charging points and stools providing secure storage for hand luggage.

Gatwick Business Development Manager for Catering Charlotte Christiansen said: “We are delighted that wagamama will be opening a flagship restaurant at Gatwick next summer. Wagamama is a world-renowned restaurant and is hugely popular with our passengers and its extensive menu is perfectly matched to airport dining as it is quick, fresh and sumptuous.”

Wagamama Global Brand Director Simon Cope added: “Airports are a natural location for us, as they address our core target customer who wants delicious, freshly cooked food, served quickly for convenience. Our unique design and fresh pan-Asian cooking will stand out in offering Gatwick’s passengers a first-class airport experience.”

The agreement follows Gatwick’s recently announced commitment to spend another £1 billion over the next seven years to continue the transformation of the airport, including the retail and food & beverage offer.
