Green light for Andorra tax free airport

ANDORRA. Discussed for years, the project of an airport for the Principality of Andorra, located near Seu d’Urgell in the Spanish province of Lerida (10km from the Andorran border), seems set to go ahead. The governments of Andorra and Spain last week fixed a time-frame to agree joint legal status and financing over the next few weeks, with the objective of issuing contracts for the reopening and expansion of an airfield already on the site.

Currently the ski resort and tax free shopping territory of Andorra is a three-hour drive from Toulouse, Perpignan or Barcelona airports. The project opens up the possibility of on-airport pick-up points for goods at Andorra’s cheap prices.

The future Andorra Pirineus Airport will be jointly financed by Spain and Andorra. Spanish airports operator AENA will have technical responsibility for the project. Andorra has over 9 million visitors a year, mainly from Spain and France and arriving by car or bus. Traffic from other European countries is expected to rise dramatically with the new air connections.
