Helsinki Airport passes 16 million passenger mark to set annual record

FINLAND. Helsinki Airport handled a record number of passengers in 2015 – with an increase of +3.0% compared to 2014 – to pass the 16 million mark.

Operator Finavia said passenger traffic across all its airports was more than 20 million for the first time last year, representing a +2.0% increase over 2014.

The final figure at Helsinki was 16,422,266, a volume increase of 473,428 passengers compared to 2014. International passenger traffic rose +2.9% while domestic travel grew +3.4%.

For the last three months of 2015, Helsinki Airport recorded a +5.5% year-over-year increase in passengers handled to four million.

The number of transit passengers at Helsinki in 2015 was 2.6 million, an increase of +3.1% compared to the previous year. Finavia said the majority of Asian passengers at the airport were from Japan and China.

“The demand for air traffic is still continuing to increase rapidly, and we are powerfully involved in the growth, which can be seen in the record-breaking passenger volumes,” commented Finavia Director Joni Sundelin.

He said Finavia expected the “good growth” in transit traffic between Europe and Asia to continue, with the signing of a partnership agreement with Beijing Airport “a significant step” in strengthening the company’s position.
