CHINA. Two much-anticipated new offshore duty free stores – both featuring Chinese licence holders supported by leading international retailers – offically open in the Hainan provincial capital Haikou today (31 January)
Hainan Development Holdings (HDH), a fully state-owned company of the Hainan Provincial Government, supported by leading international travel retailer Dufry unveiled the GDF Plaza in Mova Mall, Haikou this morning.
Licence holder Shenzhen Duty Free Group and partner DFS Group held a soft opening yesterday on phase one of its new store at the upscale Haikou Mission Hills leisure resort. The official inauguration and ribbon-cutting of Shenzhen Duty Free Haikou Mission Hills Duty Free City (Times DF) is being held today.

Both openings represent further key landmarks for Hainan’s burgeoning offshore duty free sector. The GDF Plaza – full name, Haikong Global Boutique (Haikou) Duty Free City) – will be developed in phases. Mova Mall is a major tourism and shopping destination in Haikou’s city centre featuring a wide range of shopping, dining and entertainment attractions. Over 2,500 luxury hotel rooms are within walking distance.
The downtown duty free shop will eventually span more than 38,920sq m across two buildings of the Mova Mall – Aquarius and Capricorn. The first phase opening will see some 3,000sq m of space opened in Capricorn.

During the initial phase, the temporary product assortment will cover all core categories such as perfume & cosmetics, food and confectionery, wine & spirits, consumer technology, sunglasses, luxury brands, and local premium labels.

High-power combination, high-class retail offer
As reported, the powerful combination of Shenzhen Duty Free and DFS have pledged a “world-class duty free retail experience” in Mission Hills, totalling around 30,000sq m after ultimate completion of all phases. Phase one will see customers taken on “an immersive and spellbinding tour of ‘The World in a Day’”.

The Times DF store features an extensive collection of the world’s most famous brands across key categories, including beauty, fashion & accessories, jewellery and watches, destination merchandise, wines & spirits, consumer technology, food and other items. Look out for our full report soon.
