Highland Park celebrates being fabulous at 40 – 23/05/08

The packaging for Highland Park 40yo single malt whisky plays on its rich heritage with the “H” amulet in Celtic script. Some 1,000 bottles will be available each year

UK. Maxxium Global Travel Retail launched an ultra-premium addition to the Highland Park single malt whisky range at TFWA Asia Pacific exhibition in Singapore last week.

Highland Park 40yo is a permanent extension to the range and will retail in duty free and travel retail at around €1,000.

Brand owner The Edrington Group said it would be able to release around 1,000 bottles of Highland Park 40yo each year for the foreseeable future.

Highland Park 40yo is presented in a bell-shaped, heavy-based glass decanter embossed with the brand’s pewter “H” amulet in Celtic script signifying its heritage and capped with a wooden stopper.

The bottle is encased in a solid dark oak stained wooden box with the pewter amulet embedded into the face and silver screen-printed labeling. A hinged internal door reveals a leather-bound booklet detailing the whisky’s heritage.

Highland Park 40yo is matured largely in refill casks, which are said to contribute to its rich coppery hues of amber. The natural sweetness of the oak of first fill casks would have dominated the flavour of the whisky during the long maturation process, the company said.

Whisky maker Max MacFarlane describes the bouquet as spicy and aromatic, with a background of rich dark fruits, nutmeg and darkest chocolate. On the palate it is a balance of sweet toffee notes, dark chocolate, sun dried orange zest and heather peat smokiness, while the finish is rich, long, smoky and sweet.

The new product joins the core range, which includes Highland Park 12, 15, 16, 18, 25 and 30yo.
