Making a difference at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol: HMSHost opens the Fair Taste Café

NETHERLANDS. Autogrill-owned HMSHost has opened its first Fair Taste Café at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, with sustainable materials used in the store design and fair trade coffee among the product offer.

Amsterdam Airport Schiphol Business Area Consumers Director Otto Ambagtsheer said: “As Europe’s preferred airport, it is our ambition to always be a step ahead of the competition and we have prioritised sustainability. Today passengers want to enjoy responsibly and are choosing sustainable and fair trade products more often. The arrival of the unique Fair Taste Café caters to these needs, making this outlet concept a fantastic addition to our catering services.”

Travellers can purchase coffee bearing the Max Havelaar Fairtrade hallmark, as well as sandwiches made with organic and ethically-produced ingredients. Chef Ramon Beuk conducted the opening ceremonies for Fair Taste Café earlier this month.

Wherever possible, recycled and repurposed materials were incorporated into the store design. The walls are made from reclaimed wood, pallets and tiles. Counter surfaces and tile are made from ground waste rock.

“During the development of Fair Taste Café we recognised the importance of creating a sustainable range of products and we are pleased to offer such a diverse selection to Schiphol’s travellers,” said HMSHost Europe and Middle East Vice President Dawn Wilding. “The vast majority of products available from Fair Taste Café satisfy at least one of the following qualities and hallmarks: Fair Trade, Organic, Local, Recyclable or Rainforest Alliance Certified.”

HMSHost operates over 70 restaurants and catering points at Schiphol, including the Dutch Kitchen & Bar, Café Chocolat and Bubbles Seafood & Wine Bar.
