HONG KONG, CHINA. Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) served nearly 4.92 million passengers in August, up +23% year-on-year, according to latest data from Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK).
The latest monthly passenger figures represent 82% of those recorded in the same month of pre-pandemic 2019.
The airport recorded its busiest day ever on 18 August, with passenger numbers reaching 174,600.
Overall aircraft movements also climbed +26.1% year-on-year to 31,605.
The airport registered a notable year-on-year increase in all passenger segments, including Hong Kong residents, visitors and transfer/transit passengers. Among HKIA’s top markets, Southeast Asia, Mainland China and Japan registered the sharpest monthly increases.
From January to August, the airport served 34.9 million passengers, a +43.5% increase compared to the same period last year, while aircraft movements increased +41.4% to reach 237,435.
On a 12-month rolling basis, passenger traffic surged +77.1% year-on-year to about 50.1 million, while flight movements grew +56% to 345,615.
HKIA has recently introduced two passenger airlines, Indonesia AirAsia and Thai Lion Air, which will start operating new routes connecting Indonesia and Thailand, respectively, in October.
In addition, two new destinations – Koror in Palau and Riyadh in Saudi Arabia – will join its extensive air network in August and October, respectively. ✈
