Image of the Day: Changi Airport’s captivating Wonderfall

Our regular feature, brought to you in association with Strange Nature Gin from New Zealand, celebrates memorable scenes, moments, launches and campaigns related to the global aviation and travel retail sphere.

SINGAPORE. Our choice of image today is the recently installed Wonderfall at Singapore Changi Airport Terminal 2, captured by The Moodie Davitt Report Founder & Chairman Martin Moodie on his latest visit, and a mesmerising attraction for guests in the heart of the departures hall.

The 14-metre-tall digital waterfall artwork is integrated along the vertical green wall and stucco facade in T2. As Changi Airport Group (CAG) noted when it was unveiled in late 2023, “the sound of piano music and rushing water reverberates throughout the terminal, creating a magical and majestic atmosphere for passengers and visitors alike”.

The Wonderfall took four years to complete, including eight months of intensive 3D rendering

The digital waterfall is made up of 892 flat and flexi-curved tiles

CAG collaborated with multimedia entertainment studio Moment Factory to bring the magic of nature into the passenger experience, with partnership from design studio Boiffils Architectures.

With 3D modelling, simulation and computer graphics, the animation for The Wonderfall came together to simulate water movement, including the flow, fluidity and granularity, plus misting elements.

The ‘Rhythms of Nature’ show is a beautiful three-and-a-half-minute animation with five acts set to a bespoke composition by Montreal pianist Jean-Michel Blais (see video).

Blais crafted the soundtrack on a Fazioli grand piano, supported by a string quintet and an array of vintage synthesisers.

The Wonderfall is a multi-sensorial experience that invites travellers to pause and immerse themselves in a digital spectacle. A special show begins every 30 minutes and the visuals adapt to day and night themes.

The installation has proved popular as a backdrop for photography, resulting in user-generated content across social media platforms. ✈
