HONG KONG, CHINA. Today’s choice is surely one of the airport world’s most iconic images, one I never tire of, writes Martin Moodie.
This replica Farman bi-plane is suspended from the ceiling at Hong Kong International Airport Terminal 1. The wood and fabric, French-made Farman was the first aircraft to take to the skies in Hong Kong, where it was flown in Sha Tin on 18 March 1911 by pioneer Belgian aviator Charles Van den Born.
I never fail to snap a photo of it and every time I am here at the Hong Kong gateway as I was yesterday to meet a Kiwi pal off his plane I count many others doing just the same. What a glorious, nostalgic reminder of the wonder of flight.
It ranks high, certainly top five, in my most Instagrammable sights in the airport world.
So here’s my question to airport executives, in fact to the whole travel retail community. What choice would you submit for a Great Instagrammable Sights of the Airport World ranking? I promise to publish all submissions in what will be a lovely celebration of our great industry. ✈
