Images of the day: Strangely silent at Schiphol

Our daily feature offers a snapshot of scenes, moments, launches and campaigns from the global aviation and travel retail sphere.

The eerily quiet scene at Schiphol today. Pictures: Melvin Broekaart, Aircommerce

NETHERLANDS. The COVID-19 pandemic’s impact on the European travel sector was clear to see at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol today (17 March).

On a typical Tuesday in mid-March, the gateway to the Netherlands would have expected roughly 180,000 people to pass through it.

State-of-the-art food & beverage outlets across the airport will be closed for the coming weeks

Yet the pictures kindly sent to us by  Aircommerce Founder and CEO (and Trinity Challenge winner 2019) Melvin Broekaart of the airside area paint a very different picture. With the country introducing sweeping social distancing measures, many food & beverage outlets at the airport have been closed and the retail shops are almost deserted.

A total of 5.6 million passengers used Schiphol in March 2019, a figure sure to look very different a year on
