In Memoriam: Stewart MacDuff, MacDuff International – 18/03/08

Stewart MacDuff

UK. It is with regret that we report the passing of Stewart MacDuff, former Export Director of Whyte & Mackay and founder of independent Scotch whisky company MacDuff International.

MacDuff, who was Managing Director of MacDuff International, established it in 1992 with Charles Murray and Ted Thomson. He had recently retired from the company.

With more than 75 years of experience as veterans in the Scotch Whisky industry between them, the trio started off by acquiring three leading whiskies from Allied Distillers – the Grand Macnish, Lauder’s and Islay Mist. To these he later added his namesake blend.

Describing MacDuff as “a gentleman of great vision”, Camus International Area Director Southeast Asia Richard Ferne reminisced about the man who brought him into the industry.

In a note to The Moodie Report, Ferne wrote: “Stewart MacDuff spearheaded Whyte & Mackay’s early forays into duty free, in the realisation that the “˜route to consumers’ was more direct in duty free. A sad loss to an industry which finds gentlemen like Stewart, hard to replace.”
