US. International Shoppes has opened the first of its new permanent duty free stores at Boston Logan International Airport, where Airmall is the master concessionaire. The company will eventually open four units in terminals B and E.
The first shop recently opened in Terminal E (3,540sq ft), which allows airline passengers to purchase liquor, tobacco and fragrances that are then packaged and delivered to the gate.
Airmall Boston Vice President Michael Caro said: “We are pleased to welcome the first of International Shoppes’ permanent units in terminals B and E, and are confident that they will continue to take our duty free programme to the next level. Earlier this year, International Shoppes utilized cutting-edge technology to service travellers with three virtual stores in the terminal while they made improvements to these permanent units.”
The retailer used an innovative “˜virtual duty free shop’ scheme that allowed passengers to buy duty free goods, with staff armed with tablet devices taking credit card payments.
As reported, last month International Shoppes also hailed the launch of the first Japan Airlines’ flight from Boston to Tokyo Narita, which it said would deliver a huge boost to the business.
“International Shoppes provides passengers with high-quality duty free merchandise and enables the duty free programme at the Airmall to achieve continued success,” said Caro. “We are pleased to welcome this first duty free unit to the line-up in Boston, and look forward to the opening of the remaining three units this summer.”
International Shoppes was named as duty free operator for the Airmall at Boston on 1 January. The contract is for two stores in Terminal B and two stores in Terminal E.
Airmall Boston currently manages and develops the retail concessions programme for Boston Logan International Airport in terminals B and E, which represents a total of 90,000sq ft of retail concession space. The Airmall includes more than 35 restaurants and bars, nearly 20 speciality retail units, 13 news and gift stores, and other services.
