J. Peterman Company eyes travel retail transition – 18/06/04

US. The J. Peterman Company, a well-known, upscale US mail order business, is looking to expand its reach from catalogue to retail. Consequently it has engaged David Tillman, owner and founder of DTR Ventures, to drive this transition.

J. Peterman’s 1903 Vintage Cologne line (pictured) will spearhead this new direction. The range features a 100ml Cologne, a 100ml Cologne Spray, a 100ml After Shave Balm, a 200g Concentrated Shaving Cream; and a Genuine Badger Shaving Brush. The recommended US domestic price points range from US$27 for the cream to US$78 for the brush.

The Cologne is presented in an unusual wood-encased bottle, reminiscent of the original version found by Peterman in a Paris antique shop. The juice — a woody fougère — features notes of citrus, bergamot, clary sage, cardamom, leather and frankincense. The outer carton depicts a period image of 1903 Paris.

“The J. Peterman Company has huge brand awareness and recognition in the US,” Tillman told The Moodie Report. “It mails eight catalogues a year, to around a quarter of a million people. The people who receive these catalogues have either requested them, or purchased from them in the past. And these are customers who are looking for niche, exclusive, unusual, high quality products.”

He added: “We are now actively exploring retail opportunities, in terms of domestic, international and travel retail. Our initial goal is to be with a US domestic partner by the fourth quarter.”

Tillman is also spearheading the international business development efforts of men’s skincare/treatment company Jack Black (The Moodie Report.com, 9 February).
