MALAYSIA. Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) launched a new terminal dedicated to low cost carriers last week.
The RM108 million terminal, known as Low Cost Carriers (LCC) Terminal KLIA, is designed to handle up to 10 million passengers a year.
Asia’s leading low fare airline AirAsia and its associates Thai AirAsia and Indonesia AirAsia are the main airline operators at the terminal. They are said to occupy 44 out of the 72 check-in counters. AirAsia has revolutionised low cost travel in Asia, flying to 59 destinations.
Transport Minister Datuk Seri Chan Kong Choy said the fact that the project was completed ahead of schedule in nine months, was a reflection of the government’s commitment to develop the low cost travel sector and to make air travel more affordable to all.
“Although it is a low cost carrier terminal, the facilities offered are similar, if not better, than other international airport in trhe region,” he added.
23.2 million passengers passed through KLIA in 2005, of which low cost airline passengers constituted 17.4%.
